What happens when a teacher, on the first day of school, takes her class outside and tells them to write a poem? In this collection of poetry and commentary, the students not only write but they fall in love with poetry. And they write—poems which reflect the uncertain beginnings of the school year to the deeply felt insights at the end. They tell of seeing with fresh eyes, of wondering and of identifying feelings. It’s about finding your voice.
Each poem is followed by a letter to the student and a commentary which offers interpretation and a discussion of the more technical aspects of poetry. In addition, a writing exercise is also included with each poem which, hopefully, will make that ‘blank page’ less daunting for aspiring writers.
These poems express the sensitivity, insight and the angst of students. Some are funny; some are poignant, but none of them can be dismissed. All will touch your heart.

If you enjoy writing poetry, reading poetry, or learning about poetry, you'll love this book! Written from a teacher's point of view, Lawson shows how a teacher introduces poetry writing to school age childen, and with touching patience and unconditonal love, teaches them to engage with the beautiful. The children sit under the tree in the middle of the playground and write in their journals, revealng to Miss D, their teacher, the innermost workings of their hearts. Some of the poems will break your heart, as they did Miss D's. Others will make you laugh, or awaken nostalgia that will surprise you. I give this book five stars for warmth, sensitivity, therapeutic value, beauty, and pleasure.Product details

The Tree in the Middle of the Playground Writing and Understanding Poetry edition by Richard Lawson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Richard Lawson writes in the great tradition of Kenneth Koch--playful and yet deadly serious about what is at stake in teaching poetry to children. The thing that amazes me most about this book--in addition to the obvious breadth of knowledge, the deep pedagogical ambition, and the respect Lawson demonstrates through his lessons--is the remarkable tone of the whole thing steady, full of warmth, realistic. I suspect many classroom teachers will find this book to be a trusted companion in the coming years...
Richard Lawson is a genius. Fantastic poems and helps to write poetry. Thank you Richard. I appreciate your good work!
This book is engaging for all readers. The poetry is exceptional and the material is intriguing and inspiring. Mr. Lawson has captured not only the "how to" , but the "why" while capturing the genre.
The Tree bring life to a Literature or English Class because of its sensitivity and truly nurturing qualities. The intelligence and care inside the words is so touching. This Book causes students and the readers to listen with an ear that can bond a class to become real like the Velveteen Rabbit only that it (the book is alive) from the very fist. Children will learn to listen and hold on to what is real in life and to nurture difference with Love. A true work of Art and Love. I recommend it to all who nurture connection and understanding.
